Closed paths can be created and retained from AutoCAD to AI by creating a Polyline in AutoCAD.
This essentially serves the same function as "joining" in AI but it can be applied to numerous vectors all at once. It also gives a few straight-forward options on how to treat the connectivity of the shape you are creating from individual lines.
Type PEDIT in the AutoCAD command prompt and follow the instructions. Do not explode your polylines afterward or they will be destroyed.
The polyline will appear as a single closed path in AI and will be fillable.
