Clipping mask doesnt move to new file

I have this issue, when I cut and paste the whole artwork with clipping masks to a new file, the clipping mask doesnt show up. It's like disabled; the clipping layer appears but it doesnt apply the mask. So I'm wondering how this can be fixed when I'm moving clipping mask designs from file to file.

Thanks ahead of time.

Are these layer masks (created with the Make Mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette) or are they object clipping masks (created with the Object>Clipping Mask>Make command, default shortcut Ctrl-7)?

If the former, do you have Paste Remembers Layers turned on, and is the layer containing the clipping mask fully selected? (Layer masking status is associated with the layer, and thus will get released if the layer is not selected and preserved.)

I think I did the object->clipping mask.
How do I turn the Paste Remembers Layers?

The tab at the right top of the layers pallet. Almost the bottom choice. (What are those triangle-in-circle thingies called, anyway...?)

If you used the Object clipping mask, then the setting of Paste Remembers Layers is not important. It only matters for layer masks.

But to preserve an object clipping mask, you must select the entire clipping mask group (the masking path and every object that it masks.)

In both cases, whether layers or objects, what you need to do is include in the clipboard the container that bounds the scope of the masking path. If you don't, it releases the clipping attribute on the path, because if it preserved it, there would be nothing in the destination to bound the scope.
