Illustrator saving CMYK files as RGB

Basically, that's the problem. New File as CMYK, make sure Document Color Mode has CMYK selected, create a shape, specify its fill color as CMYK. Save as *.ai file. Close file. Open file, and Illustrator tells me that this RGB file has no profile attached. Color on shape has been converted to RGB. Importing file into other programs, all show shape has RGB color value, not CMYK color value.

Edward,

There was an old issue reported with version 9 where the setting

File>Print Setup>Acrobat Distiller>Properties>Adobe PDF Setting>Screen

would change the Document Color Mode to RGB when reopening the AI document itself, after its being saved normally as .ai.

If you have this, change to to Print or whatever else. Probably there will be some colour recovering to do when you convert back to CMYK.

Well, this is Illustrator 9. But I don't have that setting. under Acrobat Distiller>Properties I have two tabs, Layout and Paper Quality (and an Advanced button), neither of the tabs nor the Advanced button has anything about PDF settings ...

Edward,

Sorry. In 9 you have to save a file as PDF in order to implement the change.

When you get the dialog box, ckick the Option dropdown and choose Print, Press, or whatever else but Screen.
