Everytime I place a File in Illustrator CS2 i get fine black lines going horizontally through it and have to embed it to make them go away. What am I doing wrong?

This happens with every file you place? What kind of file are you placing?

If this happens only with one or a few files, can you post an example to a server and give us the link so that we can test it?

Where would be a good place to post to a server? I haven't done that before.

Try a Google search with keyphrase 'free file hosting.' You should be presented with a bunch of options.

Here is the ai file and the corresponding psd.

I found that the lines are more apparent the larger the file and that when I put it over the top of the black background they come through stronger as well

Wow. I see it.

I have no idea what is causing it, but, other than embedding, I was able to get rid of the lines by downsampling your Photoshop image file to 300ppi.

I tried 450ppi just for laughs, and the lines were still there. I don't know at what ppi setting the lines disappear.

I would venture a guess that, because the problem goes away when you embed, there will be no lines in any final output. But there is no definitive test I can do here to confirm that.

Is there any particular reason you need the image to be at 500ppi? If not, I'd say drop it down to 300ppi and fuggedaboudit.

I retested from scratch.

I took the Palm Tree(CMYK).psd file in the Photoshop Samples folder and upsampled it to about 8 x 12 in. at 500ppi. I placed it an AI document. Sure enough, we get lines.

If I resave the file as a .tif and place that instead, lo and behold, no lines!

That doesn't help you, of course, because Illustrator doesn't recognize TIFFs with transparency.

Very strange stuff.

Are you printing to a PostScript printer? Try printing to Acrobat using a Press preset. (I'll try it, too.)

OK. Using your files, I'm getting a clean print (no lines) to Adobe PDF (which behaves as a virtual PostScript printer).

I'll do a quick test print to my PostScript proofer and report back again.

Using your files, again, unmodified, I get no lines on printed output from my PostScript proofer. I used 720 dpi because I didn't want to use a lot of ink (which is expensive on this sucker), but I'm quite confident lines would have shown up if they were actually in the output data.
