Installing Illustrator 10 PostScript Type 1 Fonts in Win XP Pro
(too old to reply)

I bought Illustrator 10 as part of the Educational Version of the Adobe Design Collection in 2003. It is installed on a Pentium IV laptop with 1 GB RAM and a 40Gig unpartitioned hard drive.

I read that PostScript Type 1 Support is built into Win XP and 2000, so I went Control Panel>Fonts>File>Install New Font and navigated to Adobe Illustrator 10>Support Files>Required>Fonts and found only one, the ADOIF_.PFM file (1 KB Type 1 Font File). I added that but didn't see any fonts other than the Windows True Type and Open Type fonts I already had. However, when I "explore" the Adobe Illy 10 Fonts folder mentioned above, I also see
AdobeFnt05.lst 1KB LST file
ADOIF_.12 2KB 12 file
ADOIF_.24 2KB 24 file
ADOIF_.PFB 4KB PFB file
How can I install the Adobe PostScript fonts that came with Illustrator 10 in Win XP SP2?

Jayasri,

Always install fonts in the Window Font folder.

Jayasri,

The only reason to install Adobe fonts - that were installed with an
Adobe program - via the Control Panel is if you have fonts available in
Illustrator which are NOT available in other non-Adobe applications.

The ADOIF__ font is the AdobeInvisibleFont which is both a PostScript
font and two bitmap fonts 12px and 24px. It is special font that only
contains about 8 graphic 'characters' used for interface display. You
should NOT add that font to your Windows Font Folder.
I also see AdobeFnt05.lst 1KB LST file<<
That is created by Illustrator and is merely a list of your installed
fonts. You can delete all AdobeFnt*.LST files and they will be rebuilt
as and when required. There can be dozens of such files on your machine
as one will be created in each folder where fonts are located.

A PostScript font consists of (a minimum of) two seperate files. A .pfb
file (the binary) and a .pfm file (the font metrics). Typically, a .pfb
file is around 25 to 50Kb (although can be as much as 150Kb) and the
.pfm around 1 to 5Kb. You need both in order to install the font.

From Control Panel select Fonts>File>Add Fonts. You can then navigate
through to the location of the .pfm file. If you do not check the Copy
fonts checkbox a shortcut to the file will be created in the fonts
folder rather than a copy of the file.

You all find Adobe fonts in various locations such as \Program
Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts and \Documents and
Settings\~username\Application Data\Adobe\Fonts\.

Do a system wide search on *.pfm to locate them all.

You may find additional fonts on your Installation CD, although as it is
an Educational Version, that is doubtful.
