PROBLEM
We have a series of Illustrator CS2 files that save without any error messages.

However, when opening the files, Illustrator fails with a dialog stating "Could not open file. Error ID = -50"

After the error message, the .ai file displays, but with shapes missing.

Illustrator appears to be generating damaged PostScript.

SYSTEMS
This error has been reproduced on two WinXP systems with the 12.0.1 (Latest update) version of illustrator.

This error has been replicated on a WinXP system with a clean install.

Tor,

First thing to try is to place each file in a new document, and to see whether you recover more of the artwork, hopefully enough to live with.

This is an old thread that repeats suggestions from an even older thread: Jacob Bugge, "saving - re-opening files errors & data loss" #1, 5 Apr 2006 7:20 am </cgi-bin/webx?14@@.3bbf40e1/0>

As Bert once said: Uh, oh, ID=-50 is bad.

Good luck, hopefully better than most.
