Discussion:
Illustrator + MathType

I'm working with Illustrator CS2 and
MathType5.

Formulas are edited in MathType, saved
as EPSs and placed in IL.
Problems:
1. IL cannot rasterize these EPSs.
I have to use the ugly TIFF previews.
2. The background is not transparent.
3. I cannot scale by percentage, only
by absolute dimensions.

An intermediate solution: graphics by
IL, assembly of graphics and formulas
by ID.

Hints would be much appreciated.

Sounds to me that you're probably just referring to the preview quality of the linked .eps files.

If so, go to the Files & Clipboard section in the Illustrator preferences and turn off the Use Low Resolution Proxy for Linked EPS option in order to get a high quality display.

Not sure what you mean in point 3.

Kurt,

here at home I get an accurate preview
for an EPS without TIFF. And the background
is transparent. This says at least that
it can work (opposed to the situation in
my office).
Doesn't matter how I choose 'Low Res Proxy'.

I'm still missing the opportunity how to scale
such an EPS by percentage, for instance
converting original 10pt text into 14pt text
by choosing 140% for a couple of text EPSs.

Thanks for the assistance --Gernot Hoffmann

Harron,

thank you very much - replacing
the mm-data by %-data works fine,
problem solved.

The following works for me in AI 12 (CS2):

1. Open a text-only EPS file.

2. Select all.

3. Append {* 140%} without the brackets to either the W or H field in the transform palette.

4. Make sure the constrain link is selected.

5. Hit Enter.

I can also substitute the Object | Transform | Scale dialog (which you can also get to by double-clicking the scale tool) for steps 3-5, using 140 as the value in the uniform scaling option.

Does this not work for you?

If you are talking about linked .eps files, I cannot reproduce the behaviour you're describing. Each of the three different .eps export formats in Math Type 5 are displayed accurate in Illustrator only if I turn off the above mentioned option.

As for the scaling, you do that with the Scale tool either by double clicking it in the Tool Palette or by opening the Scale dialog in the Object menu. Thought that was too obvious, so I didn't mention it.

Kurt,

I cannot reproduce the behaviour of my office
system either here at home.
Here at home everything works as described
and expected (by the experts).
By the way: the Object/Transform/Scale dialog
doesn't scale with respect to the ORIGINAL
size but to the ACTUAL size. The consequence
is this: if 120% was too large then we may
try 115%. But this results in fact in a scale
factor of 1.15*1.20 instead 1.15 (IMHO tested).
I got used by PageMaker to scale always with
respect to the original size.
Thank you, gentlemen !

Gernot,

I seldom recommend to do it, but in the office you might want to try to trash the preferences as per FAQ #2 at the top of the forum list.

As for scaling relative to the original size, in Illustrator you can use the Transform Effect (Effect > Distort and Transform). You can then change the scale factors by double clicking the effect instance in the Appearance Palette.

Kurt,

I have done everything once again, without
trashing the preferences. Now it's OK,
including the transparent background.

Scaling with reference to the original size
works as you describe. A rather hidden
feature !

Thank you very much for the assistance.

Hi!
Can anyone export from illustrator in .eps and open in mathtype? I'm having difficulties with this. If the file is saved as illustrator .eps, mathtype does not recognize it and does not open it, the message "the file does not contain equation data" appears
