When opening some files, I get the error message "could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file". Of course after that I do not have access to that file. I have no idea what would cause this.

Can anyone tell me what that's about?

Thank you.

Also, after the file I am attemping to open closes (after clicking 'okay' to the error message), a file I have open has a dialog box that asks "some files are missing or modified in the Links palette. Would you like to update them now? Yes/No

Just passing on what may be another clue.

Thanks again.

Greg,

The first question is "What type of file?"

The second is "Does it have the correct file extension for the type of
file it really is?"

.ai CS2 saved as CS2.

Just ordinary .ai file saved as default.

I can sometimes colse the app and get it to open after restart. Sometimes closing other open ,ai files will do it.

It's disconcerting tho because it will happen with new saves.

Any thoughts?

Greg,
some files are missing or modified in the Links palette<<
That sounds as though you may have moved the Illustrator file from the
location in which it was saved, thus breaking the links to linked files.

Are you saving locally or to a Network drive?

Okay, revisiting this as it's preventing me from opening needed files.

Yes, saved to network, but files haven't been renamed or moved. The strange thing is that the file actually opens, sort of. It displays all of the vector art, teasing me, just before throwing up the dialog box.

Once "OK" is clicked in the error dialog and the file closes, I get another box that says "Some files are missing in the links palette. Would you like to update them now?" Clicking "Yes" does not make the file open on next try.

On the surface, it sounds like moved files, but alas, they haven't and further, I'm trying to open them from via "Open File".

I've noticed this seems to occur when I have several apps open, thus using a lot of RAM. It would be a major pain to have to Save, Close, reboot, Open if this is a memory related error.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, saved to network<<
Saving across a network is not supported unless using version cue. You
should save locally and then copy across to the network, along with any
linked files.

One solution is pick only the AI file and put it in another location. With this you could be able to open it (without the links/errors).

Ignore the missing links when opening the file. Then relink missing links inside the program.
