Illustrator CS4 Font browsing issue

Weird thing - I have the same fonts that I did 3 months ago before I added CS4 (Using CS3) now when I highlight my text and scroll through the fonts (in th dropdown window) by using the up or down arrow changing my text in the body of my art, the font list skips down to the bottom - almost like there is a skip in the fonts? It is really weird! So I can easily scroll through and see how it affects my art? Please help this is really bugging me. I thought it was 1 or 2 fonts giving me troubles, so I deleted them but it appears to be many of them and it is happening on both my laptop and desk top. (Windows platform)

Clean out the various instances of AdobeFnt.lst files on your hard drive. Re-initializing them may resolve the matter.

In Illustrator CS4 choose Edit > Preferences > Type.
Remove the check-mark for Enable Missing Glyph Protection.

This issue has been driving me NUTS for YEARS.
