My apologies if this is a common post...I searched it on the Forum and found other posts that claim it's due to a bug in Suitcase 11, but I am not running it. Another designer in my group is also getting the error (just recently) and doesn't run Suitcase either. We're using Illustrator CS2 (v12.0.1) on Dell Optiplex machines running WinXP SP2. Files are saved and edited directly on a Windows-based network server.

We've been using Illustrator for several years and never had this error before. Could it be network related? Something to do with the PDF format?

Help!

Thanks,
-Danny

Are you or anyone else viewing the file in anything other than Illy or Bridge? Some programs make slight (but often enough) changes to the file being viewed/previewed that affects it in ways that prevent it from being edited or even opened later. Sometimes they just change the color profile.

Nope. We have checked and found definitively that no one else is viewing the file.

We have Bridge installed but don't use it. Does it run in the background? Is there a way to disable it without removing it?

Bridge might stick around in the memory cache after its opened, but, to my knowledge, it doesn't run in the background like a virus scanner.

If this is happening on all your files now, there is a much larger issue at work here than I can help with beyond saying what I avoid at nearly all costs: reinstall. [shudder] If this is happening to select files, do some backtracking on them: last time saved, by who, etc.

Did anything about your network change recently that could have altered the file(s) somehow?

Stop doing that, and see what happens. In other words, work with files only on local drives, copying to and from network drives only when the file is not open in AI.

I checked with our IT group and nothing has changed on our network.

I've already moved the file over to a local hard drive and tried working on it off the network...the problem continues to persist.

Try a different file from your local drive. I don't think any of us expected the already (apparently) damaged file to start working when moved.

Is this just happening to one file or a lot of files?

I had this happen when the fils server clock time has drifted away from the other machines on the network, causing some applications to believe the file has been modified. I'd rule this out first. All workstations should have the exact same time as the file server.

Just to rule out the obvious, nobody is altering the pdf portion in Acrobat, correct?

You saved to a new file on your hard drive and it still has the problem?
