Open the AI file in Acrobat Pro and turn on Output Preview. There you can show overprints. Switch back to Illustrator and fix.

The Overprint Black filter can also be used to remove overprints (as you are talking about text objects, it might be handy for you).

Also, there are scripts and at least one plugin that detects overprinting objects.

That would flatten transparency. Not overprint, would it?

That's right, Thomas. But at least in AI CS 3 you can enable an option that will remove overprinting when saving as .pdf version 1.3
